Event Description
Join us for a special screening of “Black Teen Revolution,” a Taking Up Space Film Festival finalist that spotlights the Black youth dance movements that shaped pop culture and the digital world as we know it.
In this powerful documentary, the filmmaker travels across the country to the communities where iconic dance crazes were born—hearing directly from the young creators behind movements like “Crank That,” “Chicken Noodle Soup,” and “Jerking.” Long before social media was dominated by likes, followers, and algorithms, a cultural revolution was quietly unfolding in basements, schoolyards, and city streets.
These dances were more than viral moments—they were declarations of identity, creativity, community, and power. While the world danced along, many of the young Black creators who built the blueprint for today’s digital culture were never given proper recognition. Black Teen Revolution centers their voices, stories, and lasting influence.
Following the screening, guests are invited to stay for reflection, conversation, and community connection.
This event is part of the Black Scranton Project’s Black History Month programming and is free and open to the public. RSVP is encouraged.
